“A short woodland-edge walk beside Cootehill.”
The Dromore Trail is an easy point-to-point walk on the edge of Cootehill, covering 2.7 km / 1.7 mi with 53 m / 174 ft of ascent and 50 m / 164 ft of descent. It takes about 40 minutes at a steady pace and reaches a highest point of 103 m / 338 ft. The route runs from Annalee Grove to Bellamount View, giving a short outing that mixes town-edge access with woodland and estate scenery near Bellamont Forest.
This is a straightforward walk rather than a circuit, so walkers finish in a different place from where they start. The line shown by the route climbs gently overall, with only modest height change, which suits anyone looking for a short outing without steep or sustained ascents. Its easy grading and brief distance make it a good choice for a relaxed walk near Cootehill.
The trail starts and finishes on the western side of Cootehill, close to the town’s road network and within easy reach of local services. Cootehill is served by Bus Éireann route 175 between Monaghan and Cavan, and by TFI Local Link route 178 to Kells, making the town a practical base for reaching the walk without a car. Drivers can approach from Cootehill and use normal town parking arrangements before walking to the start.
The walk lies beside Bellamont Forest, part of the historic Bellamont demesne on the outskirts of Cootehill. This landscape is closely tied to the old Bellamont estate, and the wider Cootehill area is known for its rivers and lakes, with the Dromore and Annalee meeting near the town. Even on a short route, that setting gives the trail a distinctly wooded and waterside character.
Bellamont Forest takes its name from the Coote family estate. Bellamont House, just beyond the trail area, is one of the most important country houses in County Cavan and remains a defining landmark in the local landscape. Cootehill itself developed as a planned market town and still carries that estate history in the surrounding roads, lodges and woodland.
With a distance of 2.7 km / 1.7 mi and an easy grade, the Dromore Trail suits a light outing, but sturdy footwear is still sensible for woodland paths and uneven ground. Because it is a point-to-point route, it is worth planning the return before setting out, whether that means a second car, a lift, or walking back the same way after finishing. HiiKER navigation is useful here for keeping track of the route between the two endpoints.
