Loop
“Wander shaded woods to peeking lake views and rusty Red Springs, a quietly contemplative loop.”
This is a short, low-commitment loop (about 2 km / 1.2 mi) that stays close to Whitewater Lake inside Whitewater Memorial State Park in southeastern Indiana. The overall elevation change is minimal (plan on ~0 m / ~0 ft net gain), but you’ll still feel a few gentle ups-and-downs where the trail rolls through wooded drainages and along the lake’s western shore.
Where you’re starting (nearest landmark/address)
The usual access point for this loop is the Hornbeam Nature Preserve parking area within Whitewater Memorial State Park, near 1418 S State Road 101, Liberty, IN 47353 (park address used for navigation). From that lot, you can pick up the Red Springs Loop and connect to viewpoints toward Whitewater Lake.
By car:
From Liberty, Indiana, drive south on IN-101 (State Road 101) into Whitewater Memorial State Park and follow signs for Hornbeam Nature Preserve / trail parking. Expect typical state-park driving: low speeds, occasional pedestrians, and seasonal congestion on warm weekends.
By public transport:
There isn’t practical, direct public transit to the park entrance or the Hornbeam lot. The closest realistic approach is getting to the Liberty, IN area by regional means (rideshare/taxi from nearby towns) and then using a rideshare to the park. If you’re planning a car-free day, confirm cell coverage and pickup reliability before you start—service can be patchy in wooded park interiors.
From the Hornbeam lot, the path quickly settles into a quiet hardwood forest setting. The tread is generally straightforward for an “easy” outing, but it can be leaf-covered and slick after rain, especially where the trail dips into small ravines.
At roughly 0.4–0.8 km (0.25–0.5 mi) in, you’ll begin getting intermittent openings through the trees where Whitewater Lake appears—more frequently when vegetation is down (late fall through early spring). The shoreline here is not a continuous open lakeside walk; instead, it’s a forested route with periodic lake views.
As you continue, the loop’s signature feature shows up: the Red Springs area. The “red” coloration is typically associated with iron-rich seepage staining the soil and stones, giving the spring run a rusty hue. This spot is often the most memorable landmark on the loop—look for damp ground, a small drainage, and the distinct color in the sediment.
From the springs, the trail bends back through the woods toward the parking area, keeping the outing short and manageable. Total time for most hikers is commonly 30–60 minutes, depending on stops for photos, birding, or checking out the spring.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before you arrive and keep it handy—short loops can still be confusing where side paths and park connectors intersect.
Wildlife is typical of a lake-and-hardwoods park mosaic: songbirds and woodpeckers are common, and you may spot turtles or other shoreline life where the lake is visible. Dawn and dusk tend to be the most active times for wildlife movement.
Whitewater Memorial State Park was created as a memorial landscape—land purchased by surrounding counties and established to honor those who served and those lost in wartime (notably tied to the World War era memorial purpose). That “memorial park” origin is part of why the setting feels more contemplative than a purely recreation-first lake park, even though it also supports boating, camping, and day-use activities around Whitewater
