Trail Highlights

Drachenschlucht

The trail begins with the Drachenschlucht, a narrow gorge that is one of the most striking features of this hike. The gorge is about 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike and features towering rock walls covered in moss and ferns. The path through the gorge is narrow and can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is essential. Wooden walkways and bridges help navigate the trickier sections.

Wilde Sau

After exiting the Drachenschlucht, the trail continues through dense forest and open meadows. This section, known as Wilde Sau, offers a more relaxed hiking experience. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer and various bird species. The forested areas are particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color.

Saalkopf

The final section of the loop takes you up to Saalkopf, a small hill that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The ascent is gradual but steady, adding about 50 meters (164 feet) to the overall elevation gain. Once at the top, you'll find a small clearing perfect for a rest and some photos.

Historical Significance

The region around Wartburgkreis is steeped in history. Eisenach is home to the Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German. While the castle is not directly on the trail, it is worth a visit if you have extra time.
