Starting near Waldshut, Germany, the Tiefenhäusern, Tiefenhäuserner Moor and Albtalschanze Loop is a captivating 12 km (7.5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Waldshut-Tiengen, a town in the southern part of the Black Forest. The nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the Waldshut-Tiengen train station. From there, it's a short drive to the starting point. For those using public transport, take a train to Waldshut-Tiengen station and then a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins near the outskirts of Waldshut, leading you through a variety of landscapes, including dense forests, open moorlands, and scenic valleys. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it an excellent warm-up as you traverse through the Tiefenhäusern area.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll enter the Tiefenhäuserner Moor, a unique wetland area that is home to a variety of flora and fauna. This section is particularly rich in birdlife, so keep your binoculars handy. The moorland is also known for its rare plant species, including several types of orchids that bloom in the spring and summer months.
Continuing on, you'll reach the Albtalschanze, a historic site that offers a glimpse into the region's past. This area was once a strategic military point, and remnants of old fortifications can still be seen. The elevation gain becomes more noticeable here, with a steady climb that rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and forests.
As you hike through the forested sections, be on the lookout for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and various bird species. The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on the correct path and to explore any interesting detours.
The last part of the loop takes you back towards Waldshut, descending gradually through a series of switchbacks. This section offers a mix of shaded forest paths and open meadows, providing a relaxing end to your hike. The trail concludes back at the starting point, where you can take a moment to rest and reflect on the diverse landscapes and historical sites you've encountered.
