This loop trail is relatively flat with an elevation gain of around 0 meters, making it accessible for hikers of various skill levels, though it is rated as medium difficulty due to its length and terrain.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the town of Bergen auf Rügen, which is the nearest significant landmark. From Bergen auf Rügen, follow the signs to Nonnensee. There is a small parking area near the lake where you can leave your car. For those using public transport, take a train to Bergen auf Rügen station. From there, you can either walk or take a local bus to the vicinity of Nonnensee.
The loop begins near the parking area by Nonnensee. For navigation, it is recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track.
As you start your hike, you will immediately notice the serene beauty of Nonnensee, a small lake surrounded by lush greenery. The trail circumnavigates the lake, offering picturesque views and a peaceful atmosphere.
The area around Nonnensee is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for various bird species, including herons and ducks, which are commonly seen around the lake. The surrounding forested areas are home to a variety of plant species, including oak and beech trees, which provide ample shade along the trail.
The region of Vorpommern-Rügen has a rich history dating back to medieval times. While the Nonnensee itself is primarily a natural attraction, the nearby town of Bergen auf Rügen has historical landmarks worth exploring. The St. Mary's Church in Bergen, for instance, dates back to the 12th century and is a fine example of Brick Gothic architecture.
About halfway through the loop, you will come across a small wooden observation deck. This is an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings. The deck is also a great place for birdwatching, so bring your binoculars if you have them.
The trail is well-maintained and primarily consists of dirt paths and gravel. However, after heavy rains, some sections may become muddy, so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are no significant inclines or declines, making it a relatively easy walk, but the medium difficulty rating is due to the length and the need for consistent pacing.
While the trail is not particularly challenging, it is always wise to carry essentials such as water, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit. The trail is well-marked, but having the HiiKER app will provide additional peace of mind. There are no restrooms along the trail, so plan accordingly before you start your hike.
The Nonnensee Loop offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
