Hochplatte Peak Walk

Starting near the picturesque town of Traunstein, Germany, the Hochplatte Peak Walk is a captivating out-and-back trail that spans approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) with an elevation gain of around 1100 meters (3609 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a rewarding summit experience.

Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Traunstein and follow signs to the Hochplatte parking area. For those using public transport, take a train to Traunstein station and then a local bus towards Marquartstein, alighting at the Hochplatte stop. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.

Trail Overview The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forests, where you can enjoy the shade and the sounds of local wildlife. Early on, you’ll encounter a variety of bird species and perhaps even spot a deer or two. The first 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) are relatively easy, gaining about 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation.

Mid-Trail Landmarks As you continue, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. Around the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) mark, you’ll reach a scenic viewpoint known as the "Aussichtspunkt," offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the Chiemsee lake in the distance. This is a great spot to take a break and hydrate.

Flora and Fauna The middle section of the trail is characterized by alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for Edelweiss and Alpine Aster. The area is also home to marmots and, if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a golden eagle soaring above.

Historical Significance The Hochplatte region has a rich history dating back to medieval times. The trail itself passes near ancient trade routes that were once used by merchants traveling between Bavaria and Austria. Around the 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) mark, you’ll find a small, weathered stone marker that dates back to the 16th century, indicating the historical significance of this path.

Final Ascent The final 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) to the summit are the most strenuous, with a steep incline and rocky terrain. This section gains approximately 400 meters (1312 feet) in elevation. Proper hiking boots and trekking poles are recommended for this part of the hike.

Summit Experience Reaching the Hochplatte peak, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Bavarian Alps and the Chiemgau region.
