As you embark on the Symposium Loop, you'll be greeted by a diverse range of flora and fauna. The trail meanders through lush forests, open meadows, and along serene streams. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The forested sections are particularly enchanting, with towering trees providing a canopy of shade and a sense of tranquility.
The region around St. Wendel is steeped in history. One of the most significant landmarks you'll encounter is the Wendalinus Basilica, located near the trailhead. This stunning basilica dates back to the 14th century and is dedicated to St. Wendelin, the patron saint of shepherds and farmers. As you hike, you'll also come across remnants of ancient Roman settlements, offering a glimpse into the area's rich past.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent, gaining approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the first 3 km (1.9 miles). This section is relatively easy and provides a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead. The path is well-marked and winds through a beautiful forested area.
Around the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark, you'll reach a plateau that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This is a great spot to take a break, enjoy a snack, and soak in the scenery. The elevation gain here is minimal, making it a relatively flat and easy section to traverse.
The last 4 km (2.5 miles) of the trail involve a gradual descent back towards St. Wendel. This section can be a bit rocky, so watch your footing. As you make your way down, you'll pass through more open meadows and small streams, providing a peaceful end to your hike.
