Trail Overview

The trail is a loop, meaning you'll start and end at the same point, making logistics simpler. The route combines three distinct paths: Zurückesteig, Fremdenweg, and Bergsteig, each offering unique features and challenges.

Zurückesteig Section

Starting from Kurort Gohrisch, the first section of the trail is the Zurückesteig. This part of the hike is characterized by its dense forest and rocky terrain. You'll navigate through a series of switchbacks that gradually ascend, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape through the trees. Keep an eye out for the diverse flora, including beech and oak trees, as well as various species of ferns and mosses that thrive in this humid environment.

Fremdenweg Section

As you transition onto the Fremdenweg, the trail becomes less steep but more rugged. This section is known for its historical significance, as it was once a popular route for travelers in the 19th century. You'll pass by several old stone markers and remnants of ancient pathways. The trail here is well-marked, but it's advisable to use a navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The Fremdenweg offers panoramic views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, so make sure to bring a camera.

Bergsteig Section

The final section, Bergsteig, is the most challenging part of the loop. This part of the trail involves a steep ascent, with some sections requiring the use of handrails and ladders. The effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with stunning views from the summit of the Gohrisch mountain. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Czech Republic. The descent is equally steep, so take your time and watch your footing.

Wildlife and Nature

The Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge region is home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot deer, wild boar, and various bird species such as the black woodpecker and the peregrine falcon. The area is also rich in plant life, with numerous wildflowers blooming in the spring and summer months.

Historical Significance

The trail passes through areas that have been significant for centuries. The Fremdenweg, in particular, was a well-trodden path for travelers and traders. The region itself has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The sandstone formations that dominate the landscape were formed millions of years ago and have been shaped by natural forces over time.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Kurort Gohrisch, where there are several parking options. If you're using public transport, take a train to Bad Schandau and then a bus to Kurort Gohrisch. The bus stop is conveniently located near the start of the trail.
