Loewenburg, Kleiner Breiberg and Grosser Breiberg via Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig

Starting near Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, Germany, this 13 km (8 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by public transport or car. If you're traveling by public transport, you can take a train to Königswinter station, which is the nearest significant landmark. From there, local buses or a short taxi ride will get you to the trailhead. For those driving, parking is available near the starting point.

Initial Ascent and Loewenburg Castle Ruins The trail begins with a gradual ascent through dense forest, providing a serene start to your hike. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the ruins of Loewenburg Castle. This medieval structure, dating back to the 12th century, offers a glimpse into the region's rich history. Kleiner Breiberg and Grosser Breiberg Continuing on, the trail leads you to Kleiner Breiberg, a smaller peak that offers a relatively easy climb. The path here is well-marked and winds through a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. After another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll reach the summit of Kleiner Breiberg. The elevation gain here is moderate, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging Grosser Breiberg.

From Kleiner Breiberg, the trail descends slightly before beginning the ascent to Grosser Breiberg. This section is more strenuous, with steeper inclines and rocky terrain. The climb is worth the effort, as the summit of Grosser Breiberg offers breathtaking views of the Siebengebirge mountain range and the Rhine River. This peak is the highest point on the trail, and the elevation gain from the base is around 200 meters (656 feet).

Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig The trail then intersects with the Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig, two well-known long-distance hiking routes. Following these paths, you'll traverse a series of rolling hills and picturesque valleys. The Bergischer Weg is known for its historical significance, having been a trade route in medieval times. The Rheinsteig, on the other hand, offers stunning views of the Rhine Valley and is famous for its challenging terrain.
