Trail Overview

The trail meanders through a serene landscape dotted with lakes, forests, and meadows. Starting from the vicinity of Plön, you'll first encounter Schierensee, a tranquil lake surrounded by lush greenery. The path around Schierensee is well-marked and relatively flat, making it an easy start to your hike.

Schierensee to Belauer See

As you continue, the trail leads you through a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests. This section is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The forested area provides ample shade, making it a pleasant walk even on warmer days.

Historical Significance

The region around Plön has a rich history dating back to medieval times. Plön Castle, located near the trailhead, is a significant landmark. Built in the 17th century, it offers a glimpse into the area's aristocratic past. Although the castle itself is not on the trail, it's worth a visit either before or after your hike.

Belauer See

Approximately halfway through the loop, you'll reach Belauer See. This lake is slightly larger than Schierensee and offers stunning views, especially at sunrise and sunset. There are several spots along the shore where you can take a break, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the scenery. The water is clear and inviting, making it a popular spot for swimming during the summer months.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time updates. Since the trail is relatively flat, it's suitable for families and older hikers, but always wear appropriate footwear as some sections can be muddy, especially after rain.

Flora and Fauna

The loop is a haven for nature enthusiasts. In spring and summer, the meadows are filled with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees. The lakes are home to various fish species, and you might even spot a heron or two. The forests are rich in mushrooms and berries, but make sure you know what you're picking as some can be toxic.

Final Stretch

As you make your way back towards Plön, the trail takes you through open fields and small patches of woodland. The final stretch offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, a perfect way to end your hike. Once back in Plön, you can explore the town's charming streets, visit local cafes, or take a boat ride on the Großer Plöner See.
