“Explore dense forests, historic ruins, panoramic summits, and picturesque meadows on this 13 km Black Forest loop.”
Starting near Ortenaukreis, Germany, this 13 km (approximately 8 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 700 meters (2,300 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available nearby. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Gengenbach, which is well-connected by train and bus services. From Gengenbach, you can take a local bus or taxi to reach the trailhead.
The hike begins with a steady ascent through dense forest, providing a serene atmosphere as you make your way up. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the ruins of Husen Castle. This medieval castle, dating back to the 12th century, offers a glimpse into the region's rich history. The ruins are well-preserved, and information boards provide context about the castle's past and its strategic importance in the region.
Continuing from Husen Castle, the trail ascends further towards Winterberg. This section is the most challenging part of the hike, with a significant elevation gain of about 400 meters (1,300 feet) over the next 3 km (1.9 miles). The effort is rewarded with panoramic views from the summit, where you can see the Black Forest stretching out in all directions. This is an excellent spot for a break and some photography.
Descending from Winterberg, the trail leads you to Grieshaberhof, a traditional Black Forest farm. This area is characterized by rolling meadows and picturesque landscapes. The farm itself is a great place to learn about local agricultural practices and perhaps even sample some regional produce if the farm shop is open. This section of the trail is relatively flat and easy, making it a pleasant contrast to the earlier ascent.
The final leg of the hike takes you along Fuggishofweg, a scenic path that winds through mixed forests and open fields. This part of the trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The path gradually descends back towards the starting point, completing the loop.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. The dense forests are home to deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. In the spring and summer, the meadows are adorned with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to the landscape. Keep an eye out for rare plants and animals, and remember to respect the natural habitat by staying on the designated paths.
The trail is best hiked from late spring to early autumn when the weather is most favorable. Winter conditions can make the trail slippery and more challenging. Ensure you have sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, and snacks. The trail is well-marked, but having a map or using HiiKER for navigation is recommended. Public restrooms and refreshment points are scarce, so plan accordingly.
