To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Oberallgäu, Germany, and look for parking near the village of Niedersonthofen. For public transport, take a train to Kempten (Allgäu) Hauptbahnhof and then a bus to Niedersonthofen. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village, making it easily accessible.
The first major landmark you'll encounter is the Niedersonthofener Wasserfall. Located about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the start, this waterfall is a stunning natural feature. The sound of cascading water and the lush greenery surrounding it create a serene atmosphere. Be cautious on the wet rocks as they can be slippery.
Continuing on, you'll ascend Stoffelberg, which is the most challenging part of the hike. The climb is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) with an elevation gain of around 150 meters (492 feet). As you make your way up, you'll pass through dense forests and open meadows. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer and various bird species. The summit offers breathtaking views of the Allgäu Alps and the surrounding valleys.
After descending Stoffelberg, you'll reach Alpenblick, a viewpoint that lives up to its name, meaning "Alpine View." This spot is perfect for a rest and some photos. The panoramic views of the Alps are spectacular, especially on a clear day. This section is relatively flat, making it a good place to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery.
The region around Oberallgäu has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The trail itself passes through areas that were once part of ancient trade routes. You'll notice old stone markers and remnants of historical pathways. The village of Niedersonthofen has charming traditional Bavarian architecture, and it's worth taking a stroll through the village either before or after your hike.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring plenty of water, and pack a light snack or lunch to enjoy at one of the scenic spots.
The trail offers a diverse range of flora and fauna. In spring and summer, the meadows are filled with wildflowers, and the forests are lush with ferns and mosses. You might spot red deer, foxes, and a variety of birds, including woodpeckers and eagles. The biodiversity adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your hike.
The last part of the loop takes you through more meadows and forests, gradually descending back to the trailhead. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to relax and reflect on the beautiful landscapes you've experienced. The entire loop takes around 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend at each landmark.
