“Explore Oberallgäu's stunning landscapes and medieval history on this challenging yet rewarding alpine hike.”
Nestled in the picturesque region of Oberallgäu, Germany, the Großer Alpsee and Ruine Hugofels via Hornweg Loop offers a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience. This 13 km (approximately 8 miles) loop trail boasts an elevation gain of around 600 meters (about 1,970 feet), making it suitable for experienced hikers seeking both adventure and breathtaking views.
The trailhead is conveniently located near the town of Immenstadt im Allgäu. For those traveling by car, you can reach Immenstadt via the A980 and B19 highways. Parking is available near the trailhead, which is well-signposted. If you prefer public transport, Immenstadt is accessible by train from major cities like Munich and Augsburg. From the Immenstadt train station, local buses or a short taxi ride will take you to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a scenic path along the shores of Großer Alpsee, the largest natural lake in the Allgäu region. As you hike along the lake, take in the serene waters and the surrounding lush greenery. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to warm up before the more challenging parts of the hike.
As you leave the lake behind, the trail starts to ascend through dense forests. This is where the elevation gain becomes more noticeable. The path is well-marked but can be steep and rocky in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as deer and various bird species that inhabit the forest.
Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll reach the Ruine Hugofels, a historic castle ruin perched on a hilltop. Dating back to the medieval period, the ruins offer a glimpse into the region's past and provide a perfect spot for a rest. From here, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the distant Alps.
Continuing on the Hornweg Loop, the trail meanders through alpine meadows and offers stunning vistas of the Allgäu Alps. This section is less steep but still requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. The meadows are dotted with wildflowers in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Given the trail's difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so check the forecast before setting out and be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. Carry enough water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route.
The region around Oberallgäu is steeped in history, with the Ruine Hugofels serving as a testament to its medieval past. The castle ruins are a reminder of the strategic importance of this area, which has been a crossroads for trade and travel for centuries. As you hike, you'll be walking in the footsteps of countless travelers who have traversed these paths over the ages.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for avid hikers exploring the Allgäu region.
