Starting near Mayen-Koblenz, Germany, the Krahnenberg and Kleiner Stern Loop is a delightful 7 km (4.35 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is estimated to be of medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the town of Andernach, which is the nearest significant landmark. There are parking facilities available near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Andernach Station. From there, you can either walk or take a local bus to the starting point.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent, offering a gradual introduction to the terrain. As you hike, you'll pass through lush forests and open meadows, providing a diverse range of scenery. The first significant landmark is the Krahnenberg, approximately 2 km (1.24 miles) into the hike. This hill offers panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and the town of Andernach below. The elevation gain here is about 50 meters (164 feet), making it a moderate climb.
Krahnenberg is historically significant due to its strategic location overlooking the Rhine River. During the Roman era, it served as a lookout point. The remnants of ancient fortifications can still be seen, adding a historical layer to your hike.
As you continue, the trail meanders through dense woodlands, home to a variety of wildlife including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for the European Green Woodpecker and the Eurasian Jay, both commonly spotted in this area.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the Kleiner Stern, a small but charming hill. The elevation gain here is minimal, around 30 meters (98 feet), making it an easier climb. This spot is perfect for a short break, offering serene views of the surrounding countryside.
The final stretch of the trail takes you through more open fields and back into the forest, eventually looping back to the starting point. The descent is gradual, making for a comfortable end to your hike.
