Trail Overview

The trail begins at the Ködeltalsperre reservoir, a significant landmark in the region. This reservoir, constructed in the 1960s, serves as a crucial water supply and flood control system. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the tranquil waters of the reservoir, reflecting the lush greenery that surrounds it.

Nature and Wildlife

As you make your way around the loop, you'll traverse through dense forests and open meadows. The Franconian Forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for the European green woodpecker and the Eurasian jay, both of which are commonly spotted in this area.

Significant Landmarks

Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll come across the Ködeltalsperre dam. This impressive structure offers a great vantage point for panoramic views of the reservoir and the surrounding forest. The dam is not only an engineering marvel but also a popular spot for photography.

Historical Significance

The region around Kronach is steeped in history. As you hike, you'll notice remnants of old stone walls and pathways that date back to medieval times. Kronach itself is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the Rosenberg Fortress, which is worth a visit if you have time before or after your hike.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be uneven in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Also, be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the forest can be quite cool and damp, even in summer.

Final Stretch

As you near the end of the loop, the trail descends gently back towards the reservoir. This final stretch offers a peaceful walk along the water's edge, providing a perfect opportunity to reflect on the natural beauty and historical richness of the area.
