The gentle path around the ponds is perfect for warming up your legs before the more challenging sections of the trail.

Externsteine

One of the most striking features of this loop is the Externsteine, a series of towering sandstone pillars that rise dramatically from the forest floor. These formations are not only a geological wonder but also hold significant cultural and historical importance. The Externsteine have been a site of human activity for thousands of years, with evidence of prehistoric carvings and medieval Christian chapels. Take some time to explore the area and perhaps climb the stairs to the top of the rocks for a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.

Keep an eye out for wild blueberries, which give this section of the trail its name. The path here is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have the HiiKER app handy for navigation, especially in the denser forested areas.
