Starting near Kreis Bergstraße, Germany, the Pionierweg and Camino Incluso trail is a captivating 9 km (5.6 miles) loop with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Kreis Bergstraße, and look for parking near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Bensheim station, which is the nearest major station. From Bensheim, you can catch a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest, where you’ll be surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of local birdlife. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the path starts to climb more steeply, gaining around 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). This section can be a bit challenging, so take your time and enjoy the lush greenery.
As you continue, you’ll come across several historical landmarks. Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you’ll find the remnants of an old Roman road, a testament to the region's rich history. This ancient pathway once connected various settlements and is a fascinating glimpse into the past.
