Trail Highlights

Roßtrappe

The trail begins with a climb to the Roßtrappe, a granite crag towering 403 meters (1,322 feet) above the Bode Gorge. The name "Roßtrappe" translates to "Horse's Hoof Print," derived from a local legend about a giant's horse leaving an imprint on the rock. This viewpoint offers panoramic vistas of the Harz mountains and the winding Bode River below. The ascent to Roßtrappe is steep but well-marked, and the effort is rewarded with breathtaking scenery.

Jungfern-Brücke

Continuing along the trail, you'll encounter the Jungfern-Brücke, or "Maiden's Bridge," a charming footbridge that spans a narrow section of the Bode Gorge. This part of the trail is relatively flat and allows for a leisurely walk while enjoying the serene surroundings. The bridge itself is a popular spot for photos, offering a picturesque view of the river and the lush forest.

Hexentanzplatz

The next significant landmark is the Hexentanzplatz, or "Witches' Dance Floor," a plateau steeped in folklore and history. According to legend, witches would gather here for their nightly revelries. Today, Hexentanzplatz is a cultural hub featuring a variety of attractions, including a mountain theater, a zoo, and several restaurants. The plateau also provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for a rest and some refreshments.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail traverses diverse ecosystems, from dense forests to open plateaus. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red deer, wild boar, and various bird species. The flora is equally diverse, with ancient beech and oak trees lining the path, especially vibrant during the autumn months.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's elevation changes and varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on course. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide additional peace of mind. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, especially during the summer months. Weather in the Harz mountains can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be prepared for sudden changes.
