Continuing on, you'll reach the Goetheweg, named after the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the Brocken in 1777. After about 5 km (3.1 miles) from the start, you'll arrive at the Brockenbahn railway crossing. Here, you can see the historic steam trains that have been ferrying visitors to the Brocken summit since the late 19th century.
