Starting near Harburg, Germany, the Undeloh Circle is a scenic loop trail that spans approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and opportunities for wildlife spotting.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Undeloh, which is well-signposted from Harburg. There is ample parking available near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Buchholz in der Nordheide and then a bus to Undeloh. The bus stop is conveniently located near the start of the trail.
The trail begins in the charming village of Undeloh, known for its traditional half-timbered houses and serene atmosphere. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the lush landscapes of the Lüneburg Heath, a unique natural reserve characterized by its expansive heathlands, pine forests, and sandy soils.
The Lüneburg Heath is renowned for its biodiversity. Depending on the season, you may encounter blooming heather, juniper bushes, and a variety of wildflowers. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of species such as the European nightjar, woodlark, and the rare black grouse. Keep an eye out for small mammals like hares and foxes, which are commonly seen in the area.
The Lüneburg Heath has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. The region was historically used for sheep grazing, which helped maintain the heathland ecosystem. During the hike, you may notice ancient burial mounds and stone circles, remnants of early human settlements. The village of Undeloh itself has a history that stretches back over a thousand years, with its name first recorded in the 10th century.
While the trail is well-marked, it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. The HiiKER app is highly recommended for its detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, as some sections of the trail can be sandy and uneven. Carry enough water and snacks, especially during the warmer months, as there are limited facilities along the route.
As you loop back towards Undeloh, the final few kilometers offer a gentle descent through mixed woodlands and open heath. The tranquility of this section provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the diverse landscapes and historical richness you've experienced throughout the hike.
