Loop
“Dappled sunlight, sweeping vistas, and echoes of history blend on this enchanting woodland loop from Osnabrück.”
Starting from the outskirts of Osnabrück, near the well-known Bismarckturm (Bismarck Tower) on the Westerberg, this loop trail covers approximately 14 km (about 8.7 miles) with a total elevation gain of around 400 metres (1,312 feet). The Bismarckturm itself, a prominent stone tower built in the early 20th century to honor Otto von Bismarck, serves as both a historical landmark and a panoramic viewpoint over the city and surrounding Teutoburg Forest.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is the nearest major hub. From there, local buses (such as lines 21 or 22) head toward Westerberg, stopping near the Bismarckturm. If driving, parking is available at the foot of the tower, with access via Bismarckstraße.
Trail Overview and Key Sections
Bismarckturm to Schellenberg
The hike begins with a gentle ascent through mixed beech and oak woodland, quickly immersing you in the tranquil atmosphere of the Teutoburg Forest. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path skirts the edge of the Schellenberg, a forested ridge known for its spring wildflowers and occasional deer sightings. The trail here is well-marked, but a navigation app like HiiKER is recommended for tracking progress and staying on course at junctions.
Bomberg Ridge and Panoramic Views
Continuing westward, the route climbs steadily toward the Bomberg, the highest point of the loop. At roughly 6 km (3.7 miles), the forest opens up to reveal sweeping views over Osnabrück and the surrounding countryside. This section is particularly scenic in autumn, when the foliage turns vibrant shades of gold and red. The Bomberg area is also notable for its World War II history, with remnants of old bunkers and interpretive signs detailing the region’s strategic significance.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for native wildlife such as red squirrels, woodpeckers, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive European badger. The forest floor is dotted with wild garlic in spring and mushrooms in autumn, though foraging is only permitted in designated areas. Birdsong is a constant companion, especially in the early morning hours.
Return via Historic Woodland Paths
The descent follows a series of winding woodland paths, passing by ancient boundary stones and small streams. At around 11 km (6.8 miles), the trail rejoins the lower slopes of the Westerberg, where you may encounter local joggers and families enjoying the forest. The final stretch leads back to the Bismarckturm, completing the loop.
Preparation and Planning
The trail is rated medium difficulty, with some steep and occasionally muddy sections, especially after rain. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, and trekking poles can be helpful on the descents. Water sources are limited, so carry enough for the full distance. The route is mostly shaded, but sun protection is advisable for the open sections near Bomberg. Waymarking is generally good, but using HiiKER for navigation ensures you stay on track, especially at less obvious junctions.
This loop offers a rewarding blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and accessible adventure, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
