From Sahlenburg, you can either walk or take a horse-drawn carriage across the tidal flats to Neuwerk Island, depending on the tide schedule. If you prefer to drive, there is parking available in Sahlenburg, but be sure to check the tide times to ensure safe passage to the island.

Trail Highlights

The Neuwerk Loop begins near the historic Neuwerk Lighthouse, a significant landmark that dates back to the 14th century. This lighthouse is one of the oldest on the German North Sea coast and has served as a navigational aid for centuries. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the sight of this impressive structure, which stands as a testament to the island's maritime heritage.

As you continue along the trail, you'll traverse the island's unique salt marshes and mudflats, which are part of the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area is renowned for its biodiversity, and you may spot a variety of bird species, including oystercatchers, redshanks, and various migratory birds that use the island as a stopover point.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail offers ample opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna. The salt marshes are home to a variety of plant species adapted to the saline environment, such as sea lavender and glasswort. Keep an eye out for the island's resident seals, which can often be seen basking on the sandbanks during low tide.

Historical Significance

Neuwerk Island has a rich history that dates back to the medieval period. In addition to the lighthouse, you'll find remnants of old fortifications and dikes that were constructed to protect the island from the sea. The island's small village, with its traditional thatched-roof houses, provides a glimpse into the past and the way of life of the island's inhabitants.

Navigation

For navigation, it's recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates on the trail conditions. This is particularly useful given the tidal nature of the area, ensuring you stay on the correct path and avoid any potential hazards.

Practical Tips

• Timing: Plan your hike according to the tide schedule to ensure safe passage to and from the island.
• Footwear: Wear waterproof footwear, as parts of the trail can be muddy, especially after high tide.
• Supplies: Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities on the island.
• Wildlife: Respect the local wildlife by maintaining a safe distance, especially from the seals.

The Neuwerk Loop offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and wildlife observation, making it a must-visit for anyone in the Hamburg area looking for a peaceful and enriching hiking experience.
