Trail Overview

The trail begins near the Ohra Dam, a significant landmark in the region. Constructed between 1960 and 1966, the dam is an impressive feat of engineering and serves as a crucial water reservoir for the area. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the serene waters of the reservoir, which provide a perfect backdrop for the initial part of your journey.

Flora and Fauna

As you progress along the trail, you'll traverse through dense forests primarily composed of beech and spruce trees. These woods are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for the European robin and the great spotted woodpecker, both commonly seen in this area.

Key Landmarks

Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across the historic Luisenthal Hunting Lodge. This lodge dates back to the 18th century and was once a favored spot for local nobility. Continuing on, you'll encounter several scenic viewpoints offering panoramic views of the Thuringian Forest. These spots are ideal for taking in the natural beauty of the region and capturing some memorable photos.

Elevation and Terrain

The trail features a mix of gentle inclines and steeper sections, with the most significant elevation gain occurring between the 6 km (3.7 miles) and 9 km (5.6 miles) marks. The terrain is varied, ranging from well-maintained paths to more rugged, uneven sections. Good hiking boots are recommended to navigate these areas comfortably.
