Trail Highlights

Schalker Turm

The trail begins with a gentle ascent towards Schalker Turm, an old observation tower that offers panoramic views of the Harz Mountains. This section is approximately 3 km (1.86 miles) into the hike and involves an elevation gain of about 100 meters (328 feet). The tower itself is a relic from the mining era, providing a glimpse into the region's industrial past.

Großer Kellerhalsteich

Continuing on, you'll reach the Großer Kellerhalsteich, a large reservoir that is part of the Upper Harz Water Regale, a historic water management system. This section is relatively flat and spans around 4 km (2.48 miles). The reservoir is a perfect spot for a short break, offering tranquil waters and the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as ducks and herons.

Oberer Grumbacher Teich

The final significant landmark on this loop is the Oberer Grumbacher Teich, another reservoir that is part of the same historic water system. This section involves a slight descent and is about 2 km (1.24 miles) from the Großer Kellerhalsteich. The area around the reservoir is lush with greenery, making it a great spot for nature photography.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in areas where the path may be less distinct.

Flora and Fauna

The Harz Mountains are rich in biodiversity. Along the trail, you'll encounter a variety of flora, including dense forests of spruce and beech trees. Wildlife is abundant, with chances to see deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The reservoirs attract waterfowl, making them excellent spots for bird-watching.

Historical Significance

The trail traverses areas that were once central to the mining industry in the Harz region. The Upper Harz Water Regale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a testament to the advanced engineering skills of the miners who created an intricate system of reservoirs and channels to manage water for mining operations. The Schalker Turm and the reservoirs you pass are remnants of this rich history.

Practical Tips

• Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the trail can be uneven in places.
• Carry enough water and snacks, especially if you plan to take breaks at the reservoirs.
• Check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
• Be mindful of local wildlife and maintain a respectful distance.
