Trail Overview

The Okerstausee Loop begins near the Oker Dam, a significant landmark in the Harz Mountains. The dam itself is an engineering marvel, constructed in the early 20th century to control flooding and generate hydroelectric power. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the serene waters of the Oker Reservoir, which provides a stunning backdrop throughout much of the trail.

Key Sections and Landmarks

• Oker Dam to Oker Reservoir (0-3 km / 0-1.9 miles): The initial section of the trail takes you along the edge of the Oker Reservoir. The path is well-marked and relatively flat, making it an easy start. Keep an eye out for various bird species that inhabit the area, including herons and kingfishers.

• Forest Path (3-6 km / 1.9-3.7 miles): As you move away from the reservoir, the trail ascends gently into the dense forest. This section offers a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, providing ample shade. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and foxes, so stay alert and you might catch a glimpse of them.

• Scenic Overlook (6-9 km / 3.7-5.6 miles): Around the halfway point, the trail reaches its highest elevation. Here, you'll find a scenic overlook that offers panoramic views of the Harz Mountains and the Oker Reservoir below. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the natural beauty of the region.

• Descent and Return (9-13 km / 5.6-8 miles): The final section of the trail descends back towards the reservoir. The path can be a bit steep in places, so take your time and watch your footing. As you approach the end of the loop, you'll pass through a series of meadows that are particularly beautiful in the spring and summer when wildflowers are in bloom.

Navigation and Safety

For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially in the forested sections.
