This loop trail is perfect for those looking to explore a variety of landscapes, from wetlands to woodlands.

Key Landmarks and Points of Interest

Emscher River: One of the first significant landmarks you'll encounter is the Emscher River. Historically, this river was heavily polluted due to industrial activities in the Ruhr area. However, recent efforts have transformed it into a cleaner, more natural waterway. The river is approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) from the trailhead.

Wildlife Observation Points: About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across several observation points where you can spot local wildlife. The area is home to a variety of bird species, including herons and kingfishers. Keep your binoculars handy for a closer look.

Wetlands and Marshes: Around the 3 km (1.8 miles) mark, the trail takes you through a series of wetlands and marshes. These areas are crucial for the local ecosystem, providing habitats for amphibians and insects. Wooden boardwalks make it easy to navigate these sections without disturbing the environment.

Historical Significance: The Emscherbruch area has a rich industrial history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a hub for coal mining and steel production. Remnants of this industrial past can still be seen along the trail, including old railway tracks and abandoned machinery. These historical artifacts offer a glimpse into the region's transformation from an industrial powerhouse to a natural sanctuary.

Navigation and Safety

Using HiiKER for navigation is highly recommended. The app provides detailed maps and real-time updates, ensuring you stay on the right path. Although the trail is well-marked, having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially if you decide to explore some of the smaller, less-traveled paths.

Flora and Fauna

The trail is rich in biodiversity. In addition to the bird species mentioned earlier, you might also encounter deer, foxes, and various small mammals. The flora is equally diverse, with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as a variety of wildflowers that bloom in the spring and summer months.

Accessibility and Amenities

The trail is accessible year-round, but the best times to visit are during the spring and fall when the weather is mild, and the scenery is particularly stunning. There are several benches and rest areas along the route, providing perfect spots for a picnic or a short break.

Getting There

For those driving, the nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the Veltins-Arena, home to the Schalke 04 football club. From there, it's just a short drive to the parking area. If you're using public transport, the Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof is the closest major train station. From the station, local buses can take you to the trailhead in about 20 minutes.
