Unter See Loop

Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, this scenic loop begins just outside the picturesque town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a region renowned for its alpine charm and storied past. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Eibsee parking area, a well-known landmark easily accessible by car or public transport. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s main train station, regular buses run to Eibsee, making it a straightforward journey for those arriving by rail.

Getting Started
The loop covers approximately 2 km (about 1.2 miles) with a moderate elevation gain of 100 metres (roughly 330 feet), making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. The path is well-marked, but carrying the HiiKER app is recommended for navigation, especially as the route weaves through dense forest and lakeside terrain.

Trail Highlights and Landmarks
Shortly after setting off, the trail skirts the edge of Untersee, a tranquil lake framed by towering spruce and fir trees. The water is crystal clear, reflecting the dramatic peaks of the Wetterstein mountains. At about the 0.5 km (0.3 mile) mark, look for a small wooden jetty—a perfect spot for photos or a quiet moment by the water.

As you continue, the path gently ascends through mixed woodland. In spring and summer, wildflowers carpet the forest floor, and the air is filled with birdsong. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as red squirrels, roe deer, and a variety of alpine birds. The forest here is part of a protected area, so tread lightly and respect the natural environment.

At the highest point of the loop, around 1 km (0.6 miles) in, panoramic views open up toward the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. On clear days, the snow-capped summit is visible in the distance, offering a dramatic backdrop to the serene lake below.

History and Culture
The Garmisch-Partenkirchen region is steeped in history, with roots dating back to Roman times. The area around Untersee was once frequented by Bavarian royalty, who prized its secluded beauty and abundant hunting grounds. Today, remnants of old hunting lodges and traditional alpine huts can still be spotted along the route, adding a sense of timelessness to the hike.

Practical Considerations
The loop is well-maintained year-round, though winter hikers should be prepared for icy patches and bring appropriate footwear. There are no facilities directly on the trail, but the nearby Eibsee area offers restrooms, cafés, and picnic spots. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife.

For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Eibsee lot, a short walk from the trailhead. Public transport users can take the Eibsee bus from Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, with the journey taking about 40 minutes. The bus stop is adjacent to the parking area, making access straightforward.

Navigation and Safety
While the route is generally easy to follow, the forested sections can be disorienting in low visibility. HiiKER provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track throughout the loop. Always check local weather conditions before setting out, as alpine weather can change rapidly.

This loop offers a rewarding blend of natural beauty, cultural history, and accessible adventure, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors to the Bavarian Alps.
