For those traveling by public transport, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is well-connected by train from major cities like Munich. From the Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station, local buses or taxis can take you to the trailhead at Hammersbach. If you prefer to drive, there are parking facilities available near the trailhead, but it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak hiking seasons, to secure a spot.

Trail Overview

The loop begins in the charming village of Hammersbach, where you'll immediately be enveloped by the serene beauty of the Bavarian landscape. As you set off, the trail quickly ascends, leading you through dense forests and alongside the rushing waters of the Hammersbach stream. The initial section is steep, with a significant portion of the elevation gain occurring in the first few kilometers. This part of the trail is a test of endurance, but the lush greenery and the sound of cascading water provide a soothing backdrop.

Key Landmarks and Natural Features

As you climb higher, the forest gives way to alpine meadows, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. One of the most striking features along the trail is the Rinderscharte, a high mountain pass that serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the Alps. At this point, you've reached one of the highest elevations on the trail, approximately 2400 meters (7874 feet) above sea level. The views from here are nothing short of spectacular, with the jagged peaks of the Wetterstein range stretching out before you.

The area is rich in alpine flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for edelweiss and gentian flowers, as well as wildlife such as chamois and marmots. Birdwatchers might spot golden eagles soaring above the peaks.

Historical Significance

The region around Garmisch-Partenkirchen is steeped in history. The town itself is known for hosting the 1936 Winter Olympics, and the surrounding mountains have long been a playground for mountaineers and adventurers. The trail passes through areas that have been traversed for centuries, with some paths dating back to ancient trade routes used by local communities.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's difficulty rating, it's crucial to be well-prepared. The path can be narrow and rocky in places, requiring sure-footedness and a good level of fitness. Weather conditions in the Alps can change rapidly, so it's essential to check forecasts and be equipped with appropriate gear, including sturdy hiking boots, layers for warmth, and rain protection. Navigation tools like HiiKER are invaluable for staying on course, especially in areas where the trail may not be clearly marked.

Final Descent

The descent back to Hammersbach is equally demanding, with steep sections that require careful footing. As you make your way down, the trail offers a different perspective of the landscape, with views of the valley and the distant town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The loop concludes back at the trailhead, where you can reflect on the day's adventure and the stunning natural beauty you've encountered.

This trail is a true test of endurance and skill, offering a rewarding experience for those who are prepared for its challenges.
