Loop
“Wander ancient woods, riverside meadows, and vibrant birdlife on this gentle loop through Bavaria’s heart.”
Starting from the outskirts of Emmering, just west of Munich, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop trail offers a flat and leisurely walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Emmeringer Hölzl, a well-known local forest area, and is easily reached by taking the S-Bahn to Olching station, followed by a short bus ride or a 15-minute walk to the forest entrance. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Emmeringer Hölzl at the end of Waldstraße, Emmering.
Emmeringer Hölzl: Ancient Woodland and Tranquil Paths
The first section leads you through the Emmeringer Hölzl, a remnant of the ancient floodplain forests that once covered much of the Amper valley. This woodland is home to mature oaks, hornbeams, and maples, with spring and early summer bringing carpets of wildflowers and the calls of woodpeckers and songbirds. The forest is a protected area, so stick to marked paths and keep an eye out for interpretive signs detailing the unique ecology and history of the region.
Along the Amper River: Waterways and Meadows
Emerging from the forest, the route follows the Amper River, a gentle waterway that has shaped the landscape for centuries. The riverside path is flat and wide, ideal for a relaxed pace. At around 5 km (3.1 miles), you’ll pass open meadows where herons, kingfishers, and sometimes even beavers can be spotted. The Amper has long been a lifeline for local communities, and you may notice remnants of old mills and water management systems along the banks.
Olching Vogelpark: Birdlife and Conservation
At approximately 8 km (5 miles), the trail reaches the Olching Vogelpark, a beloved bird sanctuary and park. This is a highlight for families and nature enthusiasts, with over 600 birds from 150 species, including storks, owls, and exotic waterfowl. The park is open to visitors for a small fee, and there are picnic areas and a café nearby. The Vogelpark is not only a place to observe birds but also plays a significant role in local conservation efforts.
Returning via Rural Paths and Village Edges
The loop continues through quiet rural tracks and the edges of Olching village, offering views of traditional Bavarian farmhouses and fields. The final stretch brings you back toward Emmering, passing through more woodland and open countryside. The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for navigation and trail updates.
Planning and Preparation
This easy, family-friendly hike requires no special equipment beyond comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make it suitable for strollers and bicycles. Water and snacks are recommended, though refreshments are available at the Vogelpark and in Olching. Public toilets can be found at the Vogelpark and near the train station in Olching.
The Emmeringer Hölzl, Amper, and Olching Vogelpark Loop is a gentle introduction to the natural and cultural heritage of the Amper valley, blending woodland, river, and village scenery with opportunities for wildlife observation and relaxation.
