“Explore the scenic Rhön Mountains on the captivating 6 km Pferdskopf and Wasserkuppe Loop, rich in natural beauty and history.”
Starting near Fulda, Germany, the Pferdskopf and Wasserkuppe Loop via Ortesweg is a captivating 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (about 984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and panoramic views, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the Wasserkuppe, the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains, which is well-signposted from Fulda. For those using public transport, take a train to Fulda and then a bus towards Gersfeld. From Gersfeld, local buses or taxis can take you to the Wasserkuppe area, where the trail begins.
The trail starts near the Wasserkuppe, a significant landmark known as the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains at 950 meters (3,117 feet). Historically, Wasserkuppe is renowned as the birthplace of gliding and has a rich aviation history. The German Gliding Museum located here is worth a visit before or after your hike.
As you embark on the Ortesweg path, you'll traverse through dense forests and open meadows. The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on track. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to acclimate to the terrain.
Approximately 3 km (1.86 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Pferdskopf summit, standing at 875 meters (2,871 feet). The summit offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Rhön landscape. On clear days, you can see as far as the Thuringian Forest. The summit is marked by a distinctive rock formation, making it a perfect spot for a short break and some photos.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. As you hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora, including beech and spruce trees. In spring and summer, the meadows are adorned with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and various bird species, including the rare black stork.
The Rhön Mountains have a storied past, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. During the Cold War, the Wasserkuppe area was a strategic observation point due to its elevation. Remnants of old military installations can still be found, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.
The trail is accessible year-round, but the best times to hike are late spring through early autumn when the weather is most favorable. In winter, the trail can be icy and snow-covered, requiring appropriate gear. There are several rest areas along the trail, but it's advisable to carry water and snacks, as there are limited facilities.
While the trail is well-marked, using HiiKER for navigation is recommended to ensure you stay on the correct path. The elevation gain is moderate but can be challenging in certain sections, so proper hiking boots and attire are essential. Always check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for hikers looking to explore the scenic Rhön Mountains.
