Starting near the picturesque town of Gersfeld, close to Fulda, Germany, the Große Nallenberg Loop via Rhön Rundweg 3 offers a delightful 4 km (approximately 2.5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Gersfeld, which is well-signposted from Fulda. There is ample parking available near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Gersfeld station. From there, it's a short walk to the start of the trail.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush, mixed forests. As you hike, you'll notice the rich biodiversity of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, home to a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for deer and a variety of bird species that inhabit this area.
The Rhön region is steeped in history. During your hike, you may come across remnants of ancient settlements and old boundary stones that date back to medieval times. The area was historically significant as a border region between various principalities.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach a vantage point offering panoramic views of the surrounding Rhön Mountains. This is an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. The elevation gain to this point is about 50 meters (164 feet), making it a moderate climb.
As you continue, the trail meanders through open meadows and dense forested areas. The Rhön is known for its unique plant species, including rare orchids and wildflowers that bloom in the spring and summer months. The diverse habitats also support a range of wildlife, from small mammals to birds of prey.
The last section of the trail descends gently back towards Gersfeld. This part of the hike is particularly beautiful in the autumn when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red and gold. The total elevation gain for the entire loop is around 100 meters (328 feet), making the descent a pleasant and easy walk.
