“The Holledau Loop offers a scenic, moderately challenging 14 km hike through Bavaria's picturesque countryside, hop gardens, and historical sites.”
Starting near the charming town of Freising, Germany, the Holledau Loop is a delightful 14 km (8.7 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the picturesque Bavarian countryside.
Freising is easily accessible by both car and public transport. If you're driving, you can park near the Freising train station, which is a convenient starting point. For those using public transport, Freising is well-connected by train from Munich, taking roughly 30 minutes. From the Freising train station, the trailhead is just a short walk away.
The Holledau Loop meanders through the heart of the Hallertau region, renowned for its hop gardens. As you set off, you'll be greeted by rolling hills and expansive fields, a testament to the area's agricultural heritage. The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have the HiiKER app handy for navigation.
The Holledau Loop is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The trail is lined with wildflowers in the spring and summer, and the forests are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. Keep an eye out for the European green woodpecker and the Eurasian jay, both of which are commonly spotted in this area.
Freising itself is one of the oldest towns in Bavaria, with a history dating back over 1,300 years. The town's cathedral, the Freising Cathedral, is a must-visit before or after your hike. The trail also passes by several historical farmhouses, showcasing traditional Bavarian architecture.
The trail is generally well-maintained, but can become muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are a few steep sections, particularly near the castle ruins, but they are manageable for most hikers. Always carry enough water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route.
As you loop back towards Freising, the final 4 km (2.5 miles) offer a gentle descent through mixed woodlands and open fields, providing a relaxing end to your hike. The trail concludes back at the Freising train station, where you can easily catch a train back to Munich or explore the town further.
The Holledau Loop is a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it an ideal day hike for those looking to experience the best of Bavaria's countryside.
