Landmarks and Natural Features

Shortly after leaving the urban edge of Freiburg, the trail immerses you in the lush greenery of the Dreisam floodplain. The riverbanks are lined with alder, willow, and poplar trees, providing ample shade and a cool breeze even on warmer days. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass under the historic Schwabentorbrücke, a bridge that hints at Freiburg’s medieval past. Keep an eye out for kingfishers darting along the water and herons fishing in the shallows.

Wildlife and Flora

The Dreisam corridor is a haven for birdlife, especially in spring and early summer. Nightingales, woodpeckers, and finches are commonly heard, and the meadows beside the path are dotted with wildflowers such as cowslips and orchids. The river itself supports a healthy population of trout and other freshwater species, and otters have occasionally been spotted by patient observers.

Historical Context

Freiburg and its surroundings have a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The Dreisam River was once vital for powering mills and supporting the city’s growth. The Fritz-Horch-Weg is named after a local conservationist who championed the preservation of the Dreisam’s natural landscape, ensuring that today’s hikers can enjoy the same riverside tranquility that has been cherished for generations.

Trail End and Return Options

The trail concludes near the village of Ebnet, close to the Gasthaus zum Schützen, a well-known local inn. From here, buses run regularly back to Freiburg’s city center, or you can retrace your steps along the river for a longer round-trip walk. The entire route is well-served by public transport, making logistics simple whether you’re planning a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk.
