To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Enzkreis, Germany, and look for parking near the trailhead. For public transport, take a train to Pforzheim Hauptbahnhof, the nearest major station. From there, you can catch a local bus to the Enzkreis area. The trailhead is conveniently located near the town center, making it accessible for those arriving by bus.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through the Neue Weinberge, a region known for its picturesque vineyards. As you hike through this area, you'll gain approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the first 3 km (1.9 miles). The vineyards offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside, especially during the grape harvest season in late summer and early autumn.
After passing through the vineyards, the trail leads you into the Burgberg forest. This section is characterized by its dense woodland and diverse flora. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and various bird species. The forested path is well-marked, but it's advisable to use the HiiKER app for navigation to ensure you stay on track.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the Burgberg, an area steeped in history. The Burgberg hill is home to the ruins of an ancient castle, which dates back to the medieval period. Take some time to explore the ruins and imagine the historical events that took place here. The elevation gain to the top of Burgberg is about 50 meters (164 feet), offering panoramic views of the Enzkreis region.
Continuing on, the trail descends gently towards the Speierling orchard. This area is named after the Speierling tree, a type of service tree known for its small, apple-like fruits. The orchard is particularly beautiful in spring when the trees are in bloom. This section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a pleasant walk after the more strenuous climb to Burgberg.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop take you through a mix of open fields and small wooded areas, gradually leading you back to the trailhead. This part of the trail is perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to soak in the serene landscape. The total elevation gain for this section is minimal, making it a relaxing end to your hike.
