Loop
“From tranquil lakeside reeds to panoramic wildflower meadows, this loop trail weaves nature and history together.”
Starting from the outskirts of Böblingen, Germany, the loop trail begins near the Warmbronn district, easily accessible by S-Bahn from Stuttgart to Böblingen station, followed by a short bus ride to Warmbronn or a 10-minute taxi ride. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Warmbronn cemetery (Friedhof Warmbronn), a common starting point for local hikes.Initial Ascent and HölzerseeThe first section leads gently uphill through mixed beech and spruce forest, gaining about 300 metres (985 feet) of elevation over the course of the loop. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), the path opens to the tranquil Hölzersee, a small lake surrounded by reeds and alder trees. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with frequent sightings of herons, woodpeckers, and sometimes kingfishers. Benches along the lakeshore offer a peaceful spot for a break.Warmbronner Kopf and Panoramic ViewsContinuing west, the trail climbs steadily toward Warmbronner Kopf, the highest point of the loop at roughly 450 metres (1,476 feet) above sea level. At about 5 km (3.1 miles), hikers are rewarded with panoramic views over the Gäu region and the distant Black Forest hills. The summit area is dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, and the open meadows attract butterflies and bees. On clear days, the Swabian Jura can be seen on the horizon.Krumm Baumle and Forest TrailsDescending from Warmbronner Kopf, the route enters the Krumm Baumle woodland, a dense and atmospheric section with ancient oaks and mossy undergrowth. This part of the trail, around the 8 km (5 mile) mark, is known for its winding paths and occasional sightings of deer and foxes. The forest floor is carpeted with wild garlic in spring, filling the air with a distinctive aroma.Cultural and Historical ContextThe region around Böblingen and Warmbronn has a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Roman era. The forests here were once royal hunting grounds, and remnants of old boundary stones can still be found along the trail. The nearby village of Warmbronn is notable as the birthplace of the poet Christian Wagner, whose legacy is celebrated in local literature and a small museum.Navigation and Trail ConditionsThe loop is well-marked with local signage, but for precise navigation and to track your progress, HiiKER is recommended. The trail surface varies from wide gravel paths to narrower forest tracks, which can become muddy after rain. Waterproof footwear is advisable, especially in the lower sections near Hölzersee.Wildlife and Seasonal HighlightsThroughout the year, the area supports a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, badgers, and a diverse range of songbirds. In autumn, the forests are vibrant with color, and mushroom foragers frequent the area. Spring brings carpets of wildflowers and the return of migratory birds.Return to TrailheadThe final stretch leads gently downhill, passing through open fields and orchards before returning to the starting point near Warmbronn cemetery. Public transport connections are available for the return journey, with buses running regularly to Böblingen and onward to Stuttgart.
