To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Birkenfeld, where parking is available near the start of the trail. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Idar-Oberstein and then a bus to Birkenfeld. The nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the Birkenfeld Castle, which is a short walk away.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through dense forests, offering a serene start to your hike. As you progress, the path becomes steeper, leading you to the Nahekopf summit. This section covers approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) and gains about 300 meters (985 feet) in elevation. The summit provides panoramic views of the Nahe Valley, a perfect spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing from Nahekopf, the trail meanders through open meadows and offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape. This section is relatively flat and stretches for about 3 km (1.9 miles). Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and various bird species. The Nahe River, which the trail overlooks, has been a vital waterway since Roman times, adding a layer of historical significance to your hike.
The final section of the trail, known as Weibersprung, is a descent back into the forest. This part of the hike is about 6 km (3.7 miles) long and includes a mix of downhill and flat terrain. The Pfad des Jägers, or Hunter's Path, is a historically significant route used by hunters in the past.
