“Explore the challenging 22 km trail from Berchtesgaden to Jenner Peak, featuring stunning alpine views and historical huts.”
Starting near Berchtesgadener Land in Germany, this 22 km (approximately 13.7 miles) out-and-back trail offers a medium difficulty hike with an elevation gain of around 1700 meters (about 5577 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car or public transport, with the nearest significant landmark being the town of Berchtesgaden. From Berchtesgaden, you can take a bus to the Königssee parking area, which is a convenient starting point for your adventure.
The hike begins with a steady ascent through lush forests, leading you to the Königsbachalm. This section covers roughly 5 km (3.1 miles) with an elevation gain of about 500 meters (1640 feet). The Königsbachalm is a picturesque alpine meadow where you can take a break and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as chamois and marmots, which are often seen in this area.
Continuing from Königsbachalm, the trail becomes steeper as you make your way towards Schneibsteinhaus. This section is approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) long with an additional elevation gain of 700 meters (2297 feet). Schneibsteinhaus is a mountain hut that offers a perfect spot for a rest and perhaps a meal. The hut has historical significance as it has been a refuge for hikers and mountaineers for decades, providing shelter and sustenance in the harsh alpine environment.
The final leg of the hike takes you to the summit of Jenner Peak. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) with an elevation gain of 500 meters (1640 feet). The trail here is rocky and can be challenging, so proper footwear and trekking poles are recommended. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden Alps, including the iconic Watzmann massif and the Königssee lake far below.
The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead, allowing you to revisit the beautiful landscapes and perhaps spot any wildlife you missed on the way up. Make sure to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on the correct path and to track your progress.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the Königssee parking area, which is well-signposted from Berchtesgaden. If using public transport, take a bus from Berchtesgaden to the Königssee parking area. The bus service is frequent and reliable, making it a convenient option for those without a car.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and historical significance, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
