Trail Overview

The trail begins with a steady ascent through lush forests, offering a cool and shaded start. As you climb, the path becomes steeper and more rugged, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The initial 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) will take you through dense woodland, where you might spot deer and various bird species.

Mid-Trail Highlights

Around the 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) mark, the forest opens up to reveal stunning alpine meadows. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding Berchtesgaden Alps. The meadows are often dotted with wildflowers in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to your hike.

Continuing on, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that lead you higher up the mountain. These switchbacks offer breathtaking views of the Königssee lake below, a glacial lake known for its crystal-clear waters. Keep an eye out for marmots and chamois, which are commonly seen in this area.

Historical Significance

As you approach the final ascent to Jenner Peak, you'll pass by remnants of old military fortifications from World War II. These structures serve as a poignant reminder of the region's turbulent history. The Berchtesgaden area was a significant location during the war, and these relics add a layer of historical depth to your hike.

Reaching the Summit

The last stretch to the summit is the most challenging, with a steep incline and rocky terrain. However, the effort is well worth it. At the peak, you'll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the Berchtesgaden National Park, including the Watzmann massif and the Hoher Göll. On a clear day, you can even see into Austria.
