“Discover the Schönberg Loop - Winkel, a 13 km hike of natural beauty, history, and alpine vistas.”
Starting near the picturesque town of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen in Germany, the Schönberg Loop - Winkel is a captivating 13 km (8 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 900 meters (2,950 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, and you will find ample parking options near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Bad Tölz station. From there, local buses or a short taxi ride will get you to the starting point.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forests, where you can expect to see a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for deer and various bird species that inhabit this area. The initial 3 km (1.9 miles) will take you through dense woodland, gradually increasing in elevation.
As you continue, you will come across several historical landmarks. Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you will encounter the ruins of an old watchtower, a relic from medieval times when the region was a strategic point for monitoring trade routes. This spot offers a great opportunity to take a break and soak in some history.
The trail then opens up to more exposed terrain, offering panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. At approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) in, you will reach the highest point of the trail, where the elevation gain peaks. This section provides breathtaking vistas and is an ideal spot for photography.
Descending from the peak, the trail meanders through alpine meadows, especially vibrant in spring and summer with wildflowers in full bloom. This area is also a habitat for marmots and other alpine wildlife. The descent is more gradual, making it easier on the knees and allowing you to enjoy the surrounding beauty.
Given the elevation changes and varying terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be very helpful, especially in foggy or low-visibility conditions.
The last 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail bring you back into the forest, eventually looping back to the starting point near Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen. This section is relatively flat, allowing for a relaxed end to your hike.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
