Key Landmarks and Points of Interest

Wekiva River: One of the highlights of this trail is its proximity to the Wekiva River. At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll come across a scenic viewpoint where you can take in the serene beauty of the river. This is an excellent spot for a short break or a picnic.

Wildlife Viewing: The trail is rich in wildlife. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species. The wetlands are particularly good for spotting wading birds like herons and egrets. If you're lucky, you might even see an alligator basking in the sun near the water bodies.

Historical Significance: The area around the trail has a rich history. The Flagler Loop is named after Henry Flagler, a key figure in the development of Florida's east coast. His influence is still evident in the region's infrastructure and historical landmarks. As you hike, you'll come across several interpretive signs that provide insights into the area's past.

Trail Sections

Kolokee Trail Section: The first part of your hike will take you through the Kolokee Trail. This section is characterized by its dense canopy of oak and pine trees, providing ample shade. The trail is relatively flat, making it an easy walk. You'll pass through several small creeks, which are usually easy to cross but can be a bit muddy after heavy rains.

Flagler Loop Section: As you transition to the Flagler Loop, the landscape opens up into more open fields and wetlands. This section is particularly beautiful during sunrise and sunset when the light casts a golden hue over the landscape. The trail here is also flat and easy to navigate.

Preparation and Safety Tips

• Footwear: Given the flat terrain, regular hiking shoes or even sturdy sneakers should suffice. However, waterproof shoes are recommended during the rainy season.
• Water and Snacks: There are no water sources along the trail, so make sure to bring enough water for the entire hike. Snacks or a packed lunch are also advisable, especially if you plan to take breaks at the scenic spots.
• Bug Spray: The wetlands can be home to mosquitoes, especially during the warmer months. Carrying bug spray will make your hike more comfortable.
• Navigation: While the trail is well-marked, having a digital map on the HiiKER app can be very useful, especially if you decide to explore any of the smaller side trails.
