Trail Overview

The trail begins at the entrance to Tiddesley Wood, a historic woodland managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. As you set off, you'll be greeted by a canopy of ancient oak, ash, and hazel trees. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike while enjoying the rich biodiversity of the area.

Flora and Fauna

Tiddesley Wood is renowned for its diverse plant and animal life. In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, while summer brings a burst of wildflowers, including orchids and primroses. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of species, such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and warblers. Keep an eye out for deer and the occasional fox as you make your way through the forest.

Historical Significance

The wood has a rich history dating back to medieval times when it was part of the Royal Forest of Feckenham. Evidence of ancient coppicing practices can still be seen, and the area was once a source of timber and charcoal. As you hike, you'll come across remnants of old boundary ditches and banks, offering a glimpse into the past.

Key Landmarks

At approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach a clearing known as "The Glade," a perfect spot for a rest and a picnic. This open area provides a contrast to the dense woodland and offers views of the surrounding countryside.

Continuing on, around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll encounter a small pond, a haven for amphibians and a great spot for wildlife observation. The trail then begins a gentle ascent, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation over the next kilometer. This section can be a bit more challenging, but the effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the Vale of Evesham.
