“Embark on a scenic Cotswolds hike blending historical allure with captivating countryside vistas at Broadway Tower.”
Embarking on the Broadway Tower hike from the charming village of Broadway in Worcestershire, England, hikers can expect an approximately 8 km (5 miles) loop that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 200 metres (656 feet). This trail is a delightful blend of Cotswold countryside charm, historical architecture, and panoramic views.
Getting to the Trailhead
The trailhead is conveniently located near the center of Broadway, a village often referred to as the "Jewel of the Cotswolds." For those arriving by car, parking is available in the village, from where the trail can be easily accessed. Public transport users can catch a bus to Broadway, with the nearest bus stops being a short walk from the start of the hike.
The Journey Begins
Setting out from the village, the trail takes you through quaint streets lined with traditional limestone buildings before transitioning into the open countryside. The path is well-trodden and marked, but having the HiiKER app can be helpful for navigation, ensuring you stay on the correct loop.
Ascending to Broadway Tower
As you ascend towards the tower, the trail meanders through fields and woodlands, offering a chance to observe the local flora and fauna. The Cotswolds are known for their diverse wildlife, including badgers, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The ascent is gradual, and as you climb, you'll be treated to increasingly impressive views of the surrounding countryside.
Historical Landmarks and Panoramic Views
The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly Broadway Tower itself. Standing at 65 feet (20 metres) high, it is the second-highest point in the Cotswolds and offers breathtaking 360-degree views. The tower, built in the late 18th century, is steeped in history and has connections to the Arts and Crafts movement. It served various purposes over the years, including a country retreat and a lookout point during the Cold War.
Descending Back to Broadway
After soaking in the history and views at the tower, the trail loops back towards the village. The descent is gentle and takes you through different scenery, with classic Cotswold dry-stone walls and open fields. Keep an eye out for the local sheep, which are an integral part of the landscape and agricultural heritage of the region.

- Wear appropriate footwear as the trail can be muddy in places, especially after rain.
