Trail Highlights

Fonthill Lake

Starting from the village, the trail initially takes you through a charming woodland area before opening up to the stunning Fonthill Lake. This man-made lake, created in the 18th century, is a haven for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for swans, ducks, and various other waterfowl. The lake's serene waters reflect the surrounding trees, making it a perfect spot for photography.

Ridge Hill

As you continue, the trail ascends gently towards Ridge Hill. This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including glimpses of the historic Fonthill Abbey ruins. Although the abbey itself is not directly on the trail, its history is deeply intertwined with the area. Built in the early 19th century by William Beckford, the abbey was once one of the grandest Gothic Revival buildings in England before it partially collapsed.

Woodland and Wildlife

The trail then meanders through dense woodlands, where you might spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your hike. The woodland paths can be muddy after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
