Cean Hill Locks and Newlands Wood via Quakers Walk

Starting near the historic town of Devizes in Wiltshire, England, the Cean Hill Locks and Newlands Wood via Quakers Walk trail offers a delightful 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) loop with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Devizes Wharf, which is easily accessible by car or public transport. If you're driving, parking is available at the Wharf car park. For those using public transport, Devizes is well-served by buses from nearby towns and cities, including Swindon and Salisbury.

Cean Hill Locks

The trail begins with a scenic walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal, where you'll encounter the impressive Caen Hill Locks. This flight of 29 locks is one of the most remarkable engineering feats of the early 19th century, designed by John Rennie and completed in 1810. As you walk along the towpath, you'll have the opportunity to observe the intricate lock system in action, especially during the summer months when the canal is bustling with narrowboats.

Quakers Walk

After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) along the canal, the trail veers off onto Quakers Walk, a historic path that dates back to the 17th century. This tree-lined avenue was originally created by the Quakers to provide a peaceful route to their meeting house. The path is flanked by mature trees, offering shade and a sense of tranquility. Keep an eye out for various bird species that inhabit the area, including woodpeckers and songbirds.

Newlands Wood

Continuing on, you'll enter Newlands Wood, a serene woodland area that provides a stark contrast to the open canal path. The wood is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including bluebells in the spring and a rich tapestry of autumnal colors later in the year. The well-marked trails within the wood make navigation straightforward, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER on hand.

Return to Devizes

The final leg of the trail loops back towards Devizes, passing through open fields and offering views of the surrounding countryside. As you approach the town, you'll pass by the Devizes Castle, a Norman structure with a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Although the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, its imposing presence is a noteworthy landmark.

Practical Information

The entire loop is relatively flat, with an elevation gain of around 0 meters, making it suitable for hikers of all levels. The trail is well-maintained, but sections along the canal can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the canal, where you can take a break and enjoy the scenery.

For those interested in extending their hike, the Kennet and Avon Canal offers numerous additional walking opportunities, and the town of Devizes itself is worth exploring for its historic buildings, local shops, and cafes.
