“Explore a scenic 12 km loop from Bradford-on-Avon, featuring woodlands, canals, and riverside paths.”
Starting near the charming town of Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire, England, this 12 km (7.5 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of woodland, canal paths, and riverside walking. The trailhead is conveniently accessible by public transport, with Bradford-on-Avon railway station being the nearest stop. From there, it's a short walk to the starting point. If you're driving, there are several parking options in Bradford-on-Avon, including the St. Margaret's Street Car Park.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Becky Addy Wood, a serene woodland area known for its lush greenery and diverse wildlife. As you make your way through the woods, you'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation, offering a moderate challenge suitable for most hikers. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species.
After exiting Becky Addy Wood, the trail leads you to the Kennet and Avon Canal. This historic waterway, completed in the early 19th century, played a crucial role in the industrial revolution, facilitating the transport of goods between Bristol and London. Walking along the canal, you'll encounter several well-preserved locks and charming narrowboats, offering a glimpse into the area's rich history.
At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the iconic Avoncliff Aqueduct. This impressive structure, designed by the renowned engineer John Rennie, carries the canal over the River Avon. It's a perfect spot for a short break and some photos.
Continuing along the trail, you'll eventually leave the canal path and follow the River Avon. The riverside section of the trail is particularly scenic, with the gentle flow of the river providing a calming backdrop. This part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a pleasant contrast to the earlier woodland ascent.
To ensure you stay on track, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app for navigation. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can help you avoid any potential detours. Be mindful of the weather, as some sections can become muddy and slippery after rain.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike.
