“Immerse yourself in the serene beauty and rich history of the Wood Moss Tarn and Satterthwaite Loop.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Satterthwaite in Westmorland and Furness, England, the Wood Moss Tarn and Satterthwaite Loop is a delightful 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (about 1,312 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the English countryside.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Satterthwaite, which is accessible via the A590 and B5285 roads. There is limited parking available near the village, so arriving early is advisable. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Windermere. From Windermere, you can take a bus to Hawkshead and then another bus or taxi to Satterthwaite.
The trail begins in the quaint village of Satterthwaite, known for its charming stone cottages and the historic St. Paul's Church. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by lush woodlands, a hallmark of the Lake District National Park. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to ease into the hike.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll reach Wood Moss Tarn, a serene and secluded tarn that offers a perfect spot for a short break. The tarn is surrounded by moss-covered rocks and dense woodland, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and various bird species that frequent the area.
As you continue, the trail begins to ascend more steeply, gaining approximately 200 meters (656 feet) over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). This section can be a bit challenging, but the effort is well worth it. The higher elevation provides stunning views of the surrounding fells and valleys. On a clear day, you can see as far as Coniston Water and the distant peaks of the Lake District.
The region around Satterthwaite has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The nearby Grizedale Forest, which the trail skirts, was once a royal hunting ground and later played a significant role during World War II as a training area for British and American troops. As you hike, you may come across remnants of old stone walls and other historical artifacts.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Also, be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the Lake District is known for its unpredictable weather.
The final stretch of the trail descends gradually back towards Satterthwaite, passing through more beautiful woodland and open fields. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful surroundings as you make your way back to the village. Upon returning, consider visiting one of the local pubs for a well-deserved meal and a pint of local ale.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate physical challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
