Whiteside, Lower Man and Helvellyn Loop from Glenridding

Starting near the picturesque village of Glenridding in Westmorland and Furness, England, this 14 km (8.7 miles) loop trail offers a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of approximately 900 meters (2,950 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available in Glenridding. Initial Ascent and Whiteside

The hike begins with a steady ascent from Glenridding, leading you through lush green pastures and gradually transitioning into more rugged terrain. As you climb, you'll pass through a mix of deciduous and coniferous woodlands, home to a variety of bird species such as the redstart and the wood warbler. After about 3 km (1.9 miles) and an elevation gain of roughly 300 meters (985 feet), you'll reach the first significant landmark, Whiteside. This spot offers panoramic views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells, making it a perfect place for a short rest and some photography.

Lower Man

Continuing along the ridge, the trail takes you towards Lower Man. This section is characterized by rocky outcrops and heather-covered moorlands. The path can be narrow and uneven, so good hiking boots are essential. Approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Lower Man, which stands at an elevation of about 925 meters (3,035 feet). Helvellyn Summit

From Lower Man, the trail ascends further to the summit of Helvellyn, one of the most famous peaks in the Lake District. The summit of Helvellyn, at 950 meters (3,117 feet), is a rewarding destination, offering 360-degree views of the surrounding fells and lakes. The summit plateau is broad and flat, making it a popular spot for a well-deserved break. Descent and Return to Glenridding

The descent from Helvellyn takes you along a different path, looping back towards Glenridding. This section of the trail is less steep but still requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. As you descend, you'll pass through grassy slopes and rocky crags, eventually re-entering the woodlands. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and deer, which are commonly spotted in this area.
