Starting near the picturesque village of Westmorland and Furness in England, the Thunacar Knott and Stickle Tarn Loop is a captivating 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (about 1,970 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness and some experience in hill walking.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, which serves as a convenient landmark and parking area. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Ambleside. From Ambleside, you can catch a bus to the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, which is well-connected by local bus services.
The trail begins near the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, where you will find ample parking and facilities to prepare for your hike. From here, the path ascends steadily, offering stunning views of the surrounding Langdale Valley. The initial climb is relatively steep, so be prepared for a bit of a workout right from the start.
As you ascend, you will soon reach Stickle Tarn, a serene mountain lake nestled beneath the imposing cliffs of Pavey Ark. This is an excellent spot to take a break, enjoy a snack, and soak in the breathtaking scenery. Stickle Tarn is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) from the trailhead, with an elevation gain of about 300 meters (984 feet).
Continuing from Stickle Tarn, the trail becomes rockier and more rugged as you make your way towards Thunacar Knott. This section of the trail is less defined, so it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Thunacar Knott, standing at 723 meters (2,372 feet), offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. This peak is roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, with an additional elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet) from Stickle Tarn.
The area is rich in diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native bird species such as the peregrine falcon and the red grouse. The flora varies with altitude, featuring hardy grasses and heathers at higher elevations and lush, green vegetation in the valleys.
The Langdale Valley has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. The valley was historically significant for its production of Langdale axes, which were highly prized in prehistoric Britain. As you hike, you may come across remnants of old quarries and settlements that tell the story of this ancient landscape.
After reaching Thunacar Knott, the trail loops back towards the starting point. The descent offers a different perspective of the valley and is generally less strenuous than the ascent. The path can be slippery, especially after rain, so take care with your footing.
