Loop
“A picturesque 10 km loop from Grasmere offering stunning views, moderate challenges, and rich historical insights.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Grasmere in Westmorland and Furness, England, the Steel Fell, Gibson Knott, and Bracken Hause Loop is a captivating 10 km (6.2 miles) journey with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters (1,969 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it accessible for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Grasmere, where parking is available at several car parks in the village. If you prefer public transport, Grasmere is well-served by buses from nearby towns such as Ambleside and Keswick. The nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the Grasmere Garden Village, a popular spot for visitors.
The trail begins with a steady ascent up Steel Fell, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Lake District. The initial climb is quite steep, gaining around 300 meters (984 feet) in the first 2 km (1.2 miles). As you ascend, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of Thirlmere Reservoir and the rolling hills that characterize this region.
Steel Fell is the first major landmark on this loop. At an elevation of 553 meters (1,814 feet), it provides a fantastic vantage point to appreciate the rugged beauty of the Lake District. The summit is marked by a cairn, and on clear days, you can see as far as the Helvellyn range.
From Steel Fell, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Gibson Knott. This section is less steep but involves some rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Gibson Knott stands at 422 meters (1,385 feet) and offers equally impressive views. The trail here is well-defined, but it's advisable to use navigation tools like HiiKER to stay on track, especially in poor visibility.
Continuing from Gibson Knott, the trail leads you to Bracken Hause. This part of the hike is more undulating, with a mix of gentle ascents and descents. Bracken Hause is a lower elevation point but is rich in flora, particularly during the spring and summer months when wildflowers are in full bloom.
The Lake District is steeped in history, and this trail is no exception. The area around Grasmere has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the landscape has inspired countless poets and writers, including William Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere for many years. As you hike, you'll pass by ancient stone walls and possibly even remnants of old farmsteads, offering a glimpse into the region's agricultural past.
The trail is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, a species native to the UK but increasingly rare. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting various species, including buzzards and kestrels. The diverse plant life ranges from hardy heather and bracken to delicate wildflowers, making the hike a visual treat.
The final section of the loop takes you back down towards Grasmere. This descent is more gradual, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscape as you make your way back to the village. The entire loop takes around 4-5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views.
This trail offers a perfect blend of challenging climbs, breathtaking scenery, and rich history, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Lake District.
