“Experience the Silver How Loop: a scenic, history-rich 8 km trail in Grasmere, perfect for moderate hikers.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Grasmere in Westmorland and Furness, England, the Silver How Loop is an 8 km (approximately 5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (1,312 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Grasmere, where parking is available near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Windermere. From Windermere, you can take a bus to Grasmere, which is well-connected by local bus services.
The trail begins near the village center of Grasmere, a location steeped in literary history as the home of the famous poet William Wordsworth. As you start your hike, you'll pass by Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth lived and wrote many of his famous works. This area is rich in cultural heritage, and a visit to the Wordsworth Museum can provide additional context before or after your hike.
The initial part of the trail involves a steady ascent through lush woodlands and open fields. The path is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is essential. As you climb, you'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). The woodland is home to a variety of bird species, so keep an eye out for robins, woodpeckers, and other native birds.
At around the 3 km (1.8 miles) mark, you'll reach the summit of Silver How. The views from here are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of Grasmere, Rydal Water, and the surrounding fells. This is a perfect spot for a rest and some photography. The elevation gain to this point is about 300 meters (984 feet).
The descent begins gently, taking you through more open terrain with scattered rocks and heather. As you continue, you'll pass by several small tarns (mountain lakes), which are ideal for a brief pause to enjoy the serene environment. The path then winds back down towards Grasmere, completing the loop. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) involve a gradual descent, bringing you back to the village with an overall elevation loss of 400 meters (1,312 feet).
For navigation, it's recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially in poor weather conditions.
The trail offers a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. In spring and summer, the fields are dotted with wildflowers, including bluebells and foxgloves. You might also encounter red squirrels, a species native to the area but increasingly rare in other parts of the UK.
Grasmere and its surroundings are not only known for their natural beauty but also for their historical significance. The village has been a center of artistic and literary activity for centuries. Besides Wordsworth, other notable figures such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas De Quincey have also been associated with the area.
As you near the end of the loop, you'll pass by the tranquil shores of Grasmere Lake. This is a great spot to relax and reflect on your hike. The village itself offers several quaint tea rooms and pubs where you can enjoy a well-deserved meal or refreshment.
This trail provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical context, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
